Thank you again for making my holiday so interesting.

Eileen B. - October 2019

What a superb tutorial!
I found Annette’s method of teaching very easy to follow .
I was really happy with my finished sketch and look forward to the next one.

Karen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - May 2020

I had a wonderful week sketching with Annette last year. As a newcomer to sketching she gave me huge confidence and invaluable help and encouragement when needed. I know the others would agree with me. I have become a very active sketcher thanks to Annette and have wonderful memories of long lunches, lots of laughs and of exploring her corner of France.

Gay J. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - January 2019 (Google Review)

Fantastic day Annette. I feel inspired to sketch at will again.

Deborah S. - May 2019

You don’t have to be an artist or any good at drawing to have a fabulous time with Annette. First time sketching and the time flew past. And our sketches actually look like something!!! Great time and learned so much.

Kendra L. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - August 2020

I’ve already done some of you Etchr Studio classes and learning so much from you. Your use of the color pencils during the first wash is absolute magic!

Susan H. - February 2022

Today I received my painting, I am absolutely delighted with it, you are so talented, I will treasure it. Thank you so much.😁

Margaret H - December 2021

I’ve been meaning to say thank you; I don’t think I would have had the courage to make this painting (Keifer’s Dream) if we’d not done our splashing session together.

Libby Page Artist - October 2018

Thanks for a lovely couple of days sketching. I really appreciated exploring different styles with you, it’s helped to open my eyes to other ways of sketching and rejuvenated my delight.
Thanks also for the care and consideration you put into planning our adventures, we greatly appreciate the effort and had a great time.

Anne S. - April 2019

Many thanks to Annette for a great introduction to sketching last Saturday in Montpellier. A day packed with information, advice and encouragement. A much needed boost to my confidence. Can’t wait for the next one! 💕💕💕

Naomi B. - March 2020

I had always hoped to join one of Annette’s wonderful sketching classes when I was living in France but ran out of time! During the lockdown, I decided to try one of her online classes and chose Sketching for Absolute Beginners. It was such an enjoyable and satisfying experience as I never imagined I would be able to draw or paint anything! You take the workshop at your own pace and Annette is there at the end of each module to answer any virtual questions that you have. There’s a great introduction to the materials you need and then you follow different modules which are so well paced and thought out. Annette takes you step by step through the process from your first doodle to planning the page, gaining perspective, then sketching in pencil, ink and water colour crayons and finally working with water colour paints. There are lots of clever tips and interesting techniques to learn, I was so pleased with my progress over such a short time – it’s such a wonderful journey and really good value. Since then, I have joined a couple of her Zoom classes and definitely plan more online workshops and hopefully I will get to a live one too!

Heather H. - March 2021

The instructor did an excellent job explaining her process and my initial drawing proportions were better than usual for me. I will try her techniques on other drawings.

Urban Sketching Streets in Southern France - November 2021

We are both so delighted with our time spent with you. We so appreciate your kindness, patience and encouragement! You are awesome!

Suzi G. - June 2018

Overwhelmed with the skills I learned and the results I achieved as a novice artist. Highly recommended.

Sarah H. - May 2022

Annette’s guided tutorials are easy to follow. Her calming, instructive voice leads you through each step clearly and result in a sketch of your very own making. Enjoy

Joceline H ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - May 2020

My husband and I had already bought four of Annette’s sketches before we attended an exhibition of hers in last January. We were completely blown away by all her work and bought two more. If we had more wall space available we would have loved to buy more and had real trouble deciding which two would make the cut! They bring us a great deal of pleasure and we are so glad that we were able to pick them up before the current lockdown.

Nicola F. - March 2020

Thank you very much for the class on Tuesday. We were very impressed with the amount of things we were able to learn from you in such a short time.

Margaret S. - February 2019

I enjoyed my holiday near Beziers very much.
Annette is an excellent teacher, supportive and attentive to each student’s needs.
I produced better pictures than I had anticipated but my holiday was absolutely crucial for me in deciding the direction in which I wanted my art to go. I shall always be very grateful to Annette for that.

Beverley R. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - March 2020

Thank you for a great class today, despite the weather! We are looking forward to practicing our sketching.

The gateway to Lo Castel - a castle dating back to the 12th century in Capestang which is a port town on the Canal du Midi just down the road (or canal!) from where I live 😍. So much to explore and sketch I've spent a lot of time here over the years and even have one of my sketches on the side of a local building!
If you can travel or are in the area then do join me end August for a sketching weekend - workshops are taking place 27 / 28 August - message me if you'd like to book or know more!

A morning out urban sketching today with @usklanguedoc 😎
Have to say it was fairly hard core in this heat - we were chasing shady places to sit as the sun moved so fast! 🥵 For me the very best part of today was chatting to the group who took part - and meeting @urbansketchers from USk Oslo and from USK Paris who came to join us - just wonderful!

Seems hard to believe it now, but many centuries ago the Mediterranean sea extended as far as Capestang - hence the origin of the name 'Cap de l’étang' (Cape of the pond). Today the salt ponds (the étangs) are drained - but it's also classified as an official nature reserve because of the herons, flamingos and many species of other birds that come to nest there. It's one of the lesser known treasures of this area and a beautiful peaceful place to spend time, and sketch ... 😊
Swipe to see my watercolours of Montels - now for sale and on display in Capestang @ Café Deco!

There's such a lot going on at this time of year, not to mention the weather which has been feeling particularly harsh this month 🥵 I'm spending a bit more time painting indoors and also connecting with artists around the world in other climates! I've recently taken part in a postcard swap - a wonderful initiative within The Virtual Art Studio @unitedartspace to exchange a piece of artwork across the globe. Here's a photo of my card from France and the watercolour I was delighted to receive all the way from Sydney - thank you so much Sandhya! 😊

Today I headed off for a 90-minute visit to Lavardens with some lovely members of the Sketching France group on Zoom. Lavardens is in Occitanie (where I live) but about 250km north west - and the village is officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has a lot of history (not unusual in these parts), full of tales of war, power, surrender, destruction and restoration. As for sketching it, and unusually for these tiny villages with narrow streets, I found an angle on Google street view and decided to use that as my reference. The perspective is always a bit 'unusual' but I could not help noticing the different architecture. Amazing how similar yet different these old stone walls can be! 😉

More early morning 'wild' watercolour sketching today whilst Juliet was checking the vines @domainelatasque and I was batting off cicadas who are now very loud and flying everywhere! It has been extremely hot here and thunderclouds are now looming. Big storms are now making their way across France from the west and we hope against hope that the forecasted hailstorm does not reach us here. Photos from Bordeaux area show hailstones the size of golfballs and the damage they have done to property is considerable. Not only that, hail can destroy an entire crop and a year of hard work overnight 😔
Fingers crossed for all vignerons tonight! 🤞

I've had a wonderful day out today with USk Languedoc. After many months of planning, USk Barcelona joined us today in Narbonne. There were some concerns about the high temperatures but we found many places to sketch and escape the sun - this garden behind the Cathedral was one of them. It was such an enjoyable day but quite long and I think we were all quite weary at the end. Now that I look at this photo again, the central stone tower looks like it's yawning and feeling tired too ....what do you think?! 🤔

On a street corner, somewhere in Puisserguier, is this luscious tree bearing fruit hiding a really interesting little building. There's a winery here too, and these old iron gates that stand protecting decades of life, loves and dramas. That's what I love about sketching and painting the every day scenes where I live - there's a bit of mystery, history, and usually a fascinating story to be told. Just on the corner of the street 😍

Yesterday was a lovely mid-week get together with the Sketching France group and a virtual trip 'up north' to the Normandy coastline. Barfleur is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France and the only one within the Manche. It has had its fair share of visitors, - Edward the Confessor, William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, not to mention a few kings. No recent battles to mention, except mine trying to sketch any kind of detail on all those boats 😂. I'm so used to sketching on location that painting from a photo is sometimes just a challenge in itself...!

Château de Puisserguier (actually Château de Bérenger) sits above this ancient town not far from where I live on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Like many fortresses in this area, it has been the site of some horrible happenings and was one of the first Cathar strongholds besieged by Simon de Montfort. 8 centuries later it's a very calm and peaceful place to paint 😊 The old stone walls are still standing - and the Occitanie flag still flies high!

Sketching out in the vineyards gives a whole different appreciation of wine and all that's involved in producing it! Lately I've been spending a bit of time with Juliet and Simon as they manage all the leaves, shoots, flowers, bugs, snakes 😳, weeds and machinery involved in creating wines @domainelatasque . This sketch was done in a little vineyard growing Carignan grapes just below the remains of an 11th century chapel St Jean de Caps. There are centuries of history and stories in this vineyard, plus a well - and a pet cemetery 🐾💞 It felt such a privilege to spend time here and be able to sketch it, however briefly! 🍇🍷

Ménerbes in Provence. This hilltop village is classified as one of the most beautiful in France - and was the latest destination for a virtual visit with @sketchingfrance! In the 1990s, Ménerbes appeared on the world tourist map thanks to Peter Mayle and the book he wrote here called 'A Year in Provence'. These days, Ménerbes has returned to what attracted the author in the first place - a beautiful, quiet, medieval village, exquisitely poised over the Luberon valley 😍

Unwrapped! This watercolour is my latest commission which I handed over today! I received a special request to do another painting of this village (very close to home) and this particular view is one of my favourites. Luckily the owners thought so too and it will be heading overseas to its new home. It is always an honour to receive a commission so this is a very happy Wednesday! 😊

A lovely day out in Leucate today with @usklanguedoc 😎
Our morning was spent in Leucate village, slightly inland from the Mediterranean beaches, considered some of the finest in the region also known for fabulous oysters, windsurfing and nudism ... (I'll just leave that there ...)
Back in Leucate village (and fully dressed) I felt I had to sketch this little arch in a side street called 'L'Entroune' - which translates as 'the between' next to the Church of Notre Dame alongside. My other quick sketch of the busy village square was such fun and I love this way of watercolour sketching without line - anything can happen (and it usually does!) 😂

To Bee or Not To Bee ...
When I was a much (much) younger person we had bee hives at the end of our garden - with honey, honeycomb, and very occasionally a bee sting (thankfully the stings were rare!)
These days, bees are even more precious little buzzing helpers in our ecosystem - so celebrating World Bee Day on 20 May, here's a bee I painted in my sketchbook several years ago!
I am still very fond of this little sketch - and the bees 💓🐝

A very quick 'on the spot' sketch from Collioure at the weekend. I never tire of visiting this amazingly colourful Mediterranean town very close to the Spanish border. Collioure has always been popular with artists but in summer 1905, when Matisse and Derain discovered Collioure - Fauvism was born. If you're a colour lover like me, check out the Fauvism trail - it's a 'living museum' based on reproductions of a collection of Matisse and Derain’s canvases, installed in the streets between all the main sites. 🎨

This is Bar le 40 - 'la Cave d'Alex' which is at the heart of Quarante village. I sketched this a few weeks ago 'on location' - perched on the corner of the road outside the hairdressers at the end of our street! I wanted to create this particular sketch as part of a sketch swap initiative between @urbansketchers in Languedoc and Barcelona. Over the last few weeks, members of our 2 groups have been exchanging sketches by post as gifts, and it has been wonderful to see the work created - and all the connections made! 😍
Thank you again @rosacolln for your fabulous sketch from Béziers. I'm looking forward to seeing you and sketching together in June!!
