The city of Carcassonne is world renowned and a sketcher’s paradise! The old Cité to the east of the city centre is a UNESCO world heritage site and an incredible fortress standing high up overlooking the city centre and surrounding countryside below. Across the river lies the ‘newer’ city of Carcassonne, with the Canal du Midi, stunning architecture and a fabulous jumble of narrow cobbled streets and elegant squares surrounded by cafés.
The city has a central train station and a good network of minibuses to help you get from one side of the city to another.
