SUMMARY:Springtime in Paris Travel Sketching Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Come and join me in Paris for a wonderful few days of watercolour\, travel sketching and sightseeing in the most popular city in the world! \nExplore the city of light with your sketchbook – the mood\, the pace and the colours will be bright!  In this action-packed weekend I’ll show you some of my favourite places to sketch where we can capture special moments in line and in colour.  This is an incredible experience for sketchers of any level of experience. \nI recommend staying in the 5th arrondissement of Paris – it’s a fabulous but quieter location which gives us access to many of the best sites for sketching. \nWe start on Friday evening with some warm-up sketches before heading out into the city on Saturday morning. I suggest you have comfortable shoes for walking and a sketch kit which includes both an A4 sketchbook for watercolour and pocket sized book for quick drawings & notes. I have ended up with some memorable sketches in themselves\, some sketch material to develop\, and enough photographs to take me through the winter! I genuinely recommend any session Annette runs as manager: I look forward to another one myself. \n  \nJust home after an amazing sketching trip to Paris with Annette and a fabulous group. Can’t recommend this trip highly enough! It was a brilliant experience seeing Paris as a sketcher. Lots of opportunities for quick sketches\, photographs\, interspersed with sightseeing whilst walking and bus trips but plenty of stops for refreshments at some fantastic cafés and restaurants. Annette made the weekend such a special experience with attention to detail\, making sure we had a memorable trip seeing lots of what Paris has to offer and have many lovely memories – and sketches- of a great weekend. SUMMARY:Colours of the Mediterranean Sketching Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Indulge in 4 glorious days sketching by the sea along the Vermillion Coast not far from Spain!   Your workshops are based in the quaint and colourful town of Collioure\, which is a treasure trove for sketchers!  It has a small port\, beaches\, cobbled streets\, a popular market and iconic views around the old chateau.  Our sketchbooks will be filled with colour as we study boats\, water and the hustle bustle of the busy cafés that surround the beach. \nFor many decades Collioure has remained a very popular destination for artists – rich in history it offers a huge variety of subjects for painting and drawing and in fantastic light. \nOver the course of these 4 days we will also spend time in the nearby coastal villages of Port-Vendres and Banyuls-sur-Mer.  Port-Vendres is a larger town with a busy fishing port and renowned for its numerous fish and sea food restaurants. Banyuls-sur-Mer is considered a jewel of the Mediterranean with a stunning coastline and the famous old vineyards on the slopes of the Catalan which source the fortified wine\, Banyuls. \nEach of the charming locations gives you the chance to experience a real taste of Catalonia in the south of France. SUMMARY:A Week in Provence: Sketching Holiday 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a wonderful week sketching in watercolour and a taste of local life in sunny Provence!  For this trip we will be based in the walled city of Avignon\, also known as the City of Popes.  Sitting alongside the Rhone river\, the city has so many treasures to sketch including historic palaces and gardens\, quant cobbled streets and bistros\, ancient waterwheels\, churches and market squares. \nIn addition to urban sketching and city life we will also take a day trip into the countryside where we can capture some iconic Provençal views over lavender fields and hilltop villages. \nThe holiday starts on Sunday evening where we’ll get together over a welcome apèritif to talk through plans for the week.  Each day will include sketching guidance and tuition and the opportunity to lunch together.  The itinerary will be flexible so there will be the possibility of free time in the afternoon for you to explore or relax on your own or … sketch some more! \nAvignon is easily accessible by train and the station is a very short walk from the city centre.  You can travel by TGV to Avignon from several major cities including Paris\, Montpellier\, Nîmes\, Béziers\, Nice and Marseille.  Closest airports include Montpellier\, Nîmes\, Béziers\, Nice and Marseille.  Please just let me know if you have any questions about getting here. \nPrice includes daily tuition (5 hours) and a day trip to sketch the Lavender fields\, but does not include accommodation in Avignon\, other transport\, meals or refreshments. \nSuggestions of places to stay: \n\nHotel de l’Angleterre\nHotel le Medieval\nRégina Boutique Hotel\n\nWorkshop price including private day tour to the lavender fields and hilltop villages: 595€ –  price is reduced for early-bird bookings !

SUMMARY:French Village Sketchbook - August 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join me to sketch life in France as it happens in and around this charming wine-making village where I live.   This is the time of the grape harvest – the days are warm and the vineyards are buzzing with activity as local winemakers seize the moment to pick the grapes.   Soak up the atmosphere and fill your sketchbook with images of local views\, people\, food\, old cobbled streets\, buildings and markets.  I’ll share ink and watercolour techniques for both beginners and more experienced travel sketchers – loads of fun with line and colour! \nEach day we’ll start sketching at 10am\, enjoy a local lunch and then finish around 4pm. \nYou will need a sketchbook suitable for watercolour.  I use a book with cold press 300gsm paper.  My sketch kit includes a 6B pencil\, watercolour pencils\, watercolours\, waterproof ink pens and a small portable folding stool.  If you do not have your own materials a spare kit can be available on loan. \nWorkshop prices exclude refreshments\, lunch & accommodation. \n  \nWhere is Quarante?\nQuarante is a small historic village not far from the Canal du Midi and located within an area of Occitanie formerly referred to as Languedoc. By car\, Quarante is about 30 minutes from Béziers or Narbonne\, and approximately an hour from Carcassonne or Montpellier. \nI love living in this village. From the minute I moved here (over 14 years ago) I felt it had a warm and friendly character\, it combines old fashioned quirks and modern day facilities to have almost everything you need to get from day to day\, French style. It’s a working village that remains active all year round. There are various shops and services\, schools\, a pharmacy\, hairdressers\, post office\, butchers – plus a friendly boulangerie and bustling café of course.  The village\, like many of this region\, is surrounded by vineyards and the wine-growing culture is deeply rooted in the culture. \nFrom a sketcher’s point of view Quarante is a wonderful place to be. If you wander into the heart of the medieval centre to find the ancient church and the fountain\, the cobbled streets are so narrow a vehicle could never pass. Explore a little further and you’ll find charming properties\, churches\, chapels\, stone walls\, shutters\, rooftops\, vineyards and donkeys in fields – if quintessential France is something you want to capture in a sketchbook\, you’ll definitely find it here. \nWhere to Stay\nThere are several fabulously equipped modern apartments in the centre of the village – please contact me if you would like more information and I can put you in touch with the owners to book directly \n\n2 people sharing the small apartment with patio (2 beds)\n3 adults sharing the larger apartment with terrace (3 beds)\n\nThere is also a Bed & Breakfast in Quarante called La Sorga de Vida – this is a Maison de Vigneron style property with high ceilings and many period features in the rooms.  La Sorga de Vida is owned & managed by French couple Genevieve and Alain.  Genevieve is passionate about catering so you can expect some substantial breakfasts!  Evening meals can be prepared by arrangement at additional cost.  There are 3 bedrooms available and prices start from 70€ per night – see reviews and availability on Booking.com. \nBooking\nThe workshop price is 180€ which includes 3 days tuition – this excludes refreshments\, meals\, transport and accommodation.

SUMMARY:Urban Sketching in France with Ian Fennelly 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join urban sketching instructor and inspirational artist Ian Fennelly for a fabulous week of workshops in the south of France 7-11 September 2026! \nIan will be teaching in Sète\, on the Mediterranean coast between Montpellier and Béziers and often described as the Venice of Languedoc. Sète offers an abundance of subjects for Ian’s wonderful art & captivating teaching style. \nWorkshop days\nIn these workshops Ian will guide you through 1 different sketch subject each day.  Usually\, the workshop day starts at 9.30am ending at approxiately 5pm. There is a short break for lunch so you can bring a picnic with you or find a local café/boulangerie nearby. \nMaterials\nYou will need an A3 sketch pad suitable for ink and watercolour – please click here for Ian’s preferred list of materials. \nGetting to Sète\nSète is easily accessible by train and on the main line from Paris.  Local / regional airports include Montpellier\, Béziers\, Nîmes and Perpignan. Toulouse or Marseille are also options but slightly further away.You can fly direct to Béziers with RyanAir or with other airlines to regional airports. Sète has a central train station which serves the high-speed trains from Marseille\, Paris\, Bordeaux\, Toulouse & Perpignan. \nThe train station is located by the old fishing port ‘La Pointe Courte’. It is a 10/15 minute walk into the centre of the city and the main port. There is a regular bus service to and from the station (Gare SNCF) operated by Sète Agglopole and they have an app where you can pre purchase tickets and check timetables. \nWhere to Stay\nYou will find a wide choice of accommodation in Sète\, from 4-star hotels to private apartments and rooms to rent. We recommend staying close to the Passage le Dauphin in the city centre. Passage le Dauphin (bus stop & shopping arcade) is in the heart of Sète\, situated alongside the Canal Royal and also near the pedestrian area\, tourist office and marketplace. If looking for central accommodation\, this area is generally recommended where there are plenty of shops\, bars and restaurants. \nCost & Confirmation\nThe cost for the week is £575 which is payable in advance.  This includes all 5 workshops with Ian but excludes travel\, accommodation and refreshments.\nIan’s events are very popular and participant numbers are limited. At time of booking a £75 non-refundable deposit is requested to secure your place. DESCRIPTION:Ideal for: A weekend away with the girls\, History lovers\, Photographers\, Francophiles\, Foodies \n\nTreat yourself to 3 days sketching in this vibrant\, cultural and historic city – you won’t regret it!  Montpellier is not just one of France’s most sought after destinations\, it offers an incredible amount of sketch subjects – from majestic buildings and classic French architecture to luscious green parks\, street cafés and let’s not forget the food and fabulous wine! \nFor this weekend break we’ll be based in the heart of the city – La Place de la Comédie.  From here we’ll start by getting to grips with some of the basics of sketching on location.  This workshop is ideal for beginners or a great refresher if you’ve already got some drawing or painting experience.  We’ll be exploring the city through our sketches\, learning a whole pack of tips and tricks about perspective\, colour\, adding people to your drawings and of course\, making memories about this incredible area of France! \nThe city is known for being pedestrian and bike-friendly with close to 200 km of paths and a great tram network\, so it’s easy to get around without a car. With an international airport it’s also incredibly accessible from almost anywhere – and you can also catch a high-speed train to or from Paris\, or even drive from London or Barcelona! \n\nWhere to stay: \nI suggest somewhere within walking distance of La Place de la Comédie. SUMMARY:A Week in Provence: Sketching Holiday 2027
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a wonderful week sketching in watercolour and a taste of local life in sunny Provence!  For this trip we will be based in the walled city of Avignon\, also known as the City of Popes.  Sitting alongside the Rhone river\, the city has so many treasures to sketch including historic palaces and gardens\, quant cobbled streets and bistros\, ancient waterwheels\, churches and market squares. \nIn addition to urban sketching and city life we will also take a day trip into the countryside where we can capture some iconic Provençal views over lavender fields and hilltop villages. \nThe holiday starts on Sunday evening where we’ll get together over a welcome apèritif to talk through plans for the week.  Each day will include sketching guidance and tuition and the opportunity to lunch together.  The itinerary will be flexible so there will be the possibility of free time in the afternoon for you to explore or relax on your own or … sketch some more! \nAvignon is easily accessible by train and the station is a very short walk from the city centre.  You can travel by TGV to Avignon from several major cities including Paris\, Montpellier\, Nîmes\, Béziers\, Nice and Marseille.  Closest airports include Montpellier\, Nîmes\, Béziers\, Nice and Marseille.  Please just let me know if you have any questions about getting here. \nPrice includes daily tuition (5 hours) and a day trip to sketch the Lavender fields\, but does not include accommodation in Avignon\, other transport\, meals or refreshments. \nSuggestions of places to stay: \n\nHotel de l’Angleterre\nHotel le Medieval\nRégina Boutique Hotel\n\nWorkshop price including private day tour to the lavender fields and hilltop villages: 595€ –  price is reduced for early-bird bookings !
