SUMMARY:French market sketch workshop - Olonzac
DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t enjoy browsing a French market?!   There’s so much atmosphere – all the sights and sounds and energy of people busy buying and selling gorgeous local produce – the smells\, shapes\, flavours and colours are an absolute treat for the senses! \nSketching a market is great fun too\, but it may seem a bit daunting at first…  Fear not\, in this workshop we will see how to simplify the drawing to capture the essence of the day\, and then use washes of bright watercolour to enhance our final sketch. \nThe workshop is designed for anyone interested in getting started with travel and urban sketching\, or someone who may not feel confident with watercolour and would like to work in a brighter\, looser style! \nYou will not need many materials\, recommended items include a sketchbook\, pencil\, basic set of watercolours and a few ink pens with waterproof ink.  If you do not have your own sketch kit then one can be provided on loan\, by prior arrangement. \nThere are 8 different markets in the series\, so you can choose a date and location to suit you.  No previous art experience is necessary\, all you’ll need is a basic sketch kit\, an open-mind and a love of traditional French markets! \n\nTuesday 11 April – Olonzac\nWednesday 10 May – Gruissan\nFriday 23 June – Béziers\nSunday 9 July – Saint Chinian\nSunday 20 August – Capestang\nThursday 31 August – Carcassonne\nThursday 14 September – Narbonne\nSaturday 14 October – Pézenas\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Spring Sketching Weekend - French Village Sketchbook
DESCRIPTION:Join me for one or both days to sketch life in France as it happens in this charming wine-making village where I live. I’ll share ink and watercolour techniques for both beginners and more experienced travel sketchers – loads of fun with line and colour! \nEach day we’ll start sketching at 10am\, enjoy a local lunch and then finish around 4pm. \nYou will need a sketchbook suitable for watercolour.  I use a book with cold press 300gsm paper.  My sketch kit includes a 6B pencil\, watercolour pencils\, watercolours\, waterproof ink pens and a small portable folding stool.  If you do not have your own materials a spare kit can be available on loan. \nWorkshop prices exclude refreshments\, lunch & accommodation. \n  \nWhere is Quarante?\nQuarante is a small historic village not far from the Canal du Midi and located within an area of Occitanie formerly referred to as Languedoc. By car\, Quarante is about 30 minutes from Béziers or Narbonne\, and approximately an hour from Carcassonne or Montpellier. \nI love living in this village. From the minute I moved here (over 14 years ago) I felt it had a warm and friendly character\, it combines old fashioned quirks and modern day facilities to have almost everything you need to get from day to day\, French style. It’s a working village that remains active all year round. There are various shops and services\, schools\, a pharmacy\, hairdressers\, post office\, butchers – plus a friendly boulangerie and bustling café of course.  The village\, like many of this region\, is surrounded by vineyards and the wine-growing culture is deeply rooted in the culture. \nFrom a sketcher’s point of view Quarante is a wonderful place to be. If you wander into the heart of the medieval centre to find the ancient church and the fountain\, the cobbled streets are so narrow a vehicle could never pass. Explore a little further and you’ll find charming properties\, churches\, chapels\, stone walls\, shutters\, rooftops\, vineyards and donkeys in fields – if quintessential France is something you want to capture in a sketchbook\, you’ll definitely find it here. \nWhere to Stay\nThere are 2 fabulously equipped modern apartments in the centre of the village \n\n2 people sharing the small apartment with patio (2 beds)\n3 adults sharing the larger apartment with terrace (3 beds)\n\nThere is also a Bed & Breakfast in Quarante called La Sorga de Vida – this is a Maison de Vigneron style property with high ceilings and many period features in the rooms.  La Sorga de Vida is owned & managed by French couple Genevieve and Alain.  Genevieve is passionate about catering so you can expect some substantial breakfasts!  Evening meals can be prepared by arrangement at additional cost.  There are 3 bedrooms available and prices start from 70€ per night – see reviews and availability on Booking.com.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop in Béziers looks at how to sketch the features of classic French architecture and city scenes with line and watercolour washes. \nYou don’t need previous art experience to take part – step-by-step you will learn how to plan your pages and simple ways to work with ink and watercolour on location. \nWorkshop starts 2pm. \nYou will need a sketchbook with paper 160gsm or higher – which can be purchased on the day if you do not have your own. \nWe will also use a black waterproof ink pen\, HB pencil\, basic watercolour kit\, brush and water pot.\nA sketch kit can be provided on loan if you do not have your own. \nA portable folding stool is also recommended.
